TATE MAYEUX
For nearly 17 years, Tate Mayeux has been the gritty, raspy driving force behind Mayeux & Broussard—a Texas music circuit staple still going as strong as ever. Coming up in the trenches of the Lone Star scene, the band got their start alongside powerhouse peers like Shane Smith & the Saints and Silverada (formerly Mike and the Moonpies). Over nearly two decades on the road, Mayeux has shared stages with icons of American songwriting, from outlaw legends like Billy Joe Shaver and Doug Kershaw to modern troubadours like Hayes Carll and Chris Stapleton. With his bandmates staying busy backing other artists, the timing opened up the perfect pocket for Tate to launch his solo venture: All My Groovy Friends.
The name is a tongue-in-cheek nod to a lifetime of misspelled last names—a way to bypass the typos and let the music speak for itself. It's not a departure from his roots, but an evolution and a chance to work with longtime friends in fresh creative capacities.
For the live show, Mayeux has assembled a powerhouse band: Jordan Matthew Young on electric guitar and vocals, Adam Johnson on electric baritone guitar and vocals—both accomplished songwriters and multi-instrumentalists who deepen the band's sound—plus Bryan McGrath driving the groove on drums and Preston Rhone holding down that distinct Gulf Coast bass.
The result takes Mayeux's signature Texas grit and infuses it with a hazy, cosmic atmosphere. As he puts it, the music "pairs well with a view of Texas or the American South—it's a good way to visit if you don't have money." Backed by his unmistakable lazy Southern drawl, a deep respect for the craft, and an upcoming EP titled Been Transcending Trends on Feel So Good Records (FSG Records), All My Groovy Friends marks an exciting, highly collaborative new chapter for one of Austin's most authentic voices.
